1885 Sep 22. Born 65 Servia St, Belfast. This is the only birth over a 10 year period of a Joseph Carroll in Belfast. RIC Register just says 1886 Born Shankhill, Antrim (RIC only gives year) Catholic. The Army list has him born 29 Aug 1884

1916 Jan 1 Was already a CSM when MID in LG
1917 Sep the 2nd Bn. RIF were in Egypt & Palestine from Sept 1917,

1917 Dec MSM awarded as CSM in Salonica in LG
1918 Feb 4 MC listed in LG as CSM
1918 21 Feb commissioned with 5/6th R Irish Fus
1918 Feb 1. MC gazetted. 7991 C.S.M. Joseph Carroll, R. Ir. Fus. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty in an attack. When all the officers of his company became casualties he took command of his company and led it with great ability. He set a magnificent example of courage and fearlessness under heavy fire.

After ADRIC he joined the Ulster Special Constabulary (MIC)
1924 Aug 18 applied for medals from Ballymena USC,
1924 seems to have then moved to 7 Argyle Gardens, Upminster, Essex.
1934 Aug 29. R Irish Fus. The notifn regarding Lt J CARROLL, M C (C A 6872), now (61737) in Gazette (Supplement) dated 29th Aug 1934 is cancelled. This referred to him exceeding the age limit and retiring.
