1891 census at Ticehurst, Sussex. Their mother Janet is an attendant in a Private Asylum, and is away from home, but is given as married. .

1901 census the family, with mother Janet age 47, are at 24, Cambridge Gardens, Kensington. She is living on own means. He was not there.

1911 census with 2nd Glocs. Regt in Malta. L/Cpl born Dumfries, Scotland. Married. I assume that he stretched the truth over age when he first joined up, presumably to fight in Boer War, as an 1882 birth would have made him eligible
