RMC Sandhurst; joined Devonshire Reg., Lieut. 1920. - R W Bovill, Esq., The Devon Regt. c/o Lloyd's Bank (Cox's Branch), 6 Pall Mall, SW.

1918 Dec 20. The undermentioned Gentlemen Cadets, from the E. Mil. Coll., to be 2nd Lts.Devon.R. Reginald Walter Bovill.

1921 Jun 18. Believed to have been in command at the Coolbawn Ambush. When the newspaper reports "a mixed crown force" they are right. The local reports also confirmed this. The Army, ADRIC (who were on a mobile patrol) and the RIC were all involved in the ambush. Capt Bovill with the Devons took the right flank with the RIC which included a Lewis Gun Detachment which killed Mullins and wounded Doyle. Members the ADRIC took the left flank with another Lewis Gun and they shot Hartley all those who killed or wounded were on the left flank of the ambush

The IRA set out to ambush the British Forces, but were themselves ambushed by the British

1928 Jul 18. Does well in the Devonshire Regiment cricket week

1928 Aug 17. Passed the army promotion exam. In the event it takes him till 1933 to get his promotion to Captain

1929 May 18. Arrives in UK from Malta. Army Officer. Travels 3rd class on SS Moreton Bay.

1929 Dec 27. Played in India for Free Foresters against Punjab and NW Frontier Provence

1929 to 1936 he played 10 Minor Counties cricket matches for Devon

1933 Feb 8 . Devon Reg .— The undermentioned Lts. to be Capts. R. W. Bovill.

1933 Jul 12. Attends the Devonshire Regimental dinner in London

1937 Jun 11. Devon R.—Capt. A. G. Davidson to be Adjt. vice Capt. R. W. Bovill. .

1937 Jun 14, attends Devons regimental dinner in London

1939 Jan 28 Marries Elizabeth Burke Timins in India. I cannot find the record of the marriage. She was born 1912, died 2004

1940 Aug 15 Son David born, however the child died 3 days later

1946 Apr/Jun Born a son George A J Bovill in Plymouth

1948 Mar 8. Lilian Maud Timins (presumably his mother in law) dies and he is an executor on her will. He is given as Lt-Col on the legal announcement.

1949 Jan 28. Devon R. Maj. R. W. Bovill (18639) retires on ret. pay on account of disability, and is granted the hon. rank of Lt.-Col.
