2nd Lt John James Gough, Shropshire LI

1899 Feb 5. Born Dublin South. He appears to have been born James John Gough.

1899 Feb 26. Baptism of James John Gough of 5 St Johns Gardens, Island Bridge. Son of James John and Theresa Annie Gough. His father was a draughtsman.

1901 census at Dublin in 2 Valleymount, Ushers Quay, Dublin.  Kathleen, his sister became blind as a little girl, eventually becoming a resident of the school for the blind  in Dublin, where she resided for the rest of her life.

1918 Mar 16. Lands in France

1918 Jun 26. Commissioned into KSLI. Shrop. L.I. The undermentioned to be 2nd Lts. for service in the Field— Sjt. John James Gough, from R. Ir. Regt.

1919 Aug 20. Shrops. L.I. 2nd Lt. J. J. Gough retires, receiving a gratuity.

1920 Jul 20. Joined ADRIC with service number 27.

1920 Aug 18. Resigned ADRIC. Paid to this date. (Weeks #28 also resigned this date)

1924 May 27. He seems to be gearing up for a trans-Atlantic trip. Signs on as a "deck boy" on Gothic Star. It is difficult to know if he actually took up this employment, as another card exists in Sep 1924 when he certainly joined the Gothic Star as a Deck Boy

1924 Sep 23 This is him signing on as a seaman on his "first ship"the "Gothic Star" in South Shields, England as a "deck boy".The voyage was from South Shields in England to Vancouver, then on to Seattle. The Gothic Star left South Shields on 21 Oct 1920. He got as far as Vancouver, however the Crew List on arrival at Seattle shows that he never re-joined the ship when it left Vancouver on 11 Nov 1924 bound for Seattle.

So he jumped ship in Vancouver, and eventually knocked on the door of a boarding house (run by his future mother-in-law) in New Westminster. Later on married a daughter of the boarding house owners, and spent the rest of his life in New Westminster, and later Vancouver.

Married Marie Irene Lillian Marjorie Godfrey and they had 3 children - Terrence James Gough  b. 3 Sept. l926   Maureen Theresa Gough b. 24 May l928 and Barbara Joan Gough b. 17 Oct. l938    All in New Westminster, B.C.

He was a member of a semi-pro soccer team in Longview, Washington, USA. for a period of time, when his first child was a baby in pram

1927 Sep 15. Visits USA from Canada, intending to settle in USA. His wife is not with him

1930 Mar 10. Arrives in Canada from Belfast on SS Montcalm. He is a Canadian citizen now, and has lived in Canada since 1923 at New Westminster. He is a "book keeper". His nearest relative in Canada is “Mrs Gough,” of 718 Royal Ave., New Westminster, BC. His nearest relative in Ireland is “Mr. Gough,” of 23 Gresham Ave., Fairview, Dublin.

1935 Travels with wife (7 years younger) and two children (Terrence age 7 and Maureen age 6) 1 Kiminage Rd, Harold's Cross, Dublin. He is a "stevedore". The eldest child started school in Dublin, so that visit must have been for a period.

1945 His marriage fails. His drinking problems led to an unhappy marriage, and he and his wife separated around 1945. His wife who had never worked to that point, had to get a job at Eatons in New Westminster, where she worked till she retired at the age of 65, then worked part time till 70

1949 Feb 22. K.S.L.I. 2nd Lt. J. J. Gough (60192) ceases to belong to the Res. of Offrs.

1979 Jan 4. Dies in Vancouver age 79
