1918 Jun 17. He changes his name by deed poll from "Henry Gilbertson Smith " to " Henry Gilbertson-Smith"

1918 Jun 24. MC Gazetted " Lt. Henry Gilbertson Smith, Lond.R., attd, M.G. Corps. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when in charge of two machine guns during an enemy attack. Then the infantry near him were driven back on to his position he showed splendid leadership in assisting to rally them and formed a strong point. He kept his guns in action, holding up the enemy’s attack for over six hours, and thus enabled the troops in rear to consolidate a defensive position. It was largely owing to his courage and determination under heavy fire that a difficult situation was restored
