Oddly there is a John Smythe in 1911 census in a Boys Home who was born Camberwell in 1896, but no birth goes with that, nor a 1901 census entry.
I cannot find a commission to go with the MIC. The service file for JJ Smythe of Londonderry is the same man as the MIC - he is in Royal Highlanders in 1919
