His MM and bar was sold for £460 in 2001 by Christies. Their sales blurb says that he ...first entered the French Theatre of War in early September 1915 as a Corporal in the 11th Battalion, Royal Fusiliers. As noted by the Regimental War Diary, he was quick to distinguish himself, showing 'conspicuous bravery' when recovering the body of a Lieutenant Sharp 'from within 15 yards of the German trenches'. It is more likely, however, that his M.M. reflected brave service on the 'First Day of the Somme', when his Battalion was engaged in 'fierce hand-to-hand fighting at Maple Trench' and sustained over 200 casualties. Subsequently commissioned into the Lincolnshire Regiment in May 1917 , having added a Bar to his M.M. in the previous January, Warner finished the War as a Lieutenant in the 16th Machine Gun Corps.

1921 Jun 8. Daniel Cowley was shot and killed by a raiding party on his house from O Coy. DI GA Warner was in overall charge, and there were groups approaching the farm from north , sough and west. S/L L. Ventress was in charge of the Auxiliaries at the north side of the house. He was accompanied by S/L RL Rolfe. Their evidence was that Cowley came running out of the house, they called on him to halt and when he did not they opened fire, and Cowley was killed.. Ventress then searched house with DI GA Warner
