1919 Jul 29 MC Gazetted. T./2nd/Lt. Ernest Barnes, W. York. R. attd. 10th Bn. During the attack on Neuvilly on October 10th, 1918, he led his platoon with great gallantry and dash. He waded the River Selle, put an enemy machine gun out of action killing two of the enemy machine-gun team, and although suffering heavy casualties he succeeded in getting his platoon to within 100 yards of his objective where he was finally held up by intense machine-gun fire. He later displayed marked gallantry when engaged in establishing the crossings of the Selle south of Neuvilly.
