He left the pub in the late afternoon on a journey he’d never complete because, as he crossed the bridge over the River Tywi, he must have lost his footing and fallen in. “The water was high and he got swept almost a mile downstream – the people in the pub said they could hear his screams for help, but when they went out to look for him they found nothing.“There was no streetlighting in those days, you see, so it must have been pitch-black. He was eventually discovered the next day, his body slumped over a fallen tree in the middle of the river. “He was still clinging on to one of the branches – I suppose the hypothermia must have got him.
