1892 May 8. Born Woolwich, Kent ( I assume his father was a soldier in RFA). His father Frederick Shepherd was in the Boer War where he received the Distinguished Conduct medal (the family still have the medal)
He spent most of his early life in India where his father was stationed. His two sisters and brother were born in India.
1901 census He was living at 23 Friars Walk,Exeter, Devon with his mother,siblings and grandfather,Alfred Cherritt,(named on the census form as Alfred Sherrill).
1907 Joined the Army as a boy soldier
1911 census at Louisberg, 29th Brigade R F A, 125Th Battery, Bordon, Hants. A Gunner in RFA. His parents are at Harpury, Glocs and his father is an Army Pensioner.
