1915 Mar 8 Landed in France. He was decorated twice whilst in the Royal Garrison Artillery. Firstly a Military Medal in 1916, he was wounded around this time also.
1917 Jun 23 Commissioned in RGA .The undermentioned Wt. and N.C.O.'s to be 2nd Lts. for service in the Field:— Serjt. Joseph Hunt
1918 Sep 16 MC gazetted . 2nd Lt. Joseph Hunt, M.M., R.G.A. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty. One night, whilst the battery commander was away looking for a new position, an intense bombardment was opened on the battery. This officer took charge and withdrew all the guns except one. He would have got them all away had not the railway line been blown up. During the whole movement the position and approaches were under very heavy fire, and it was due to his splendid example that the guns were saved
1918 Oct 5 Seconded for service with RAF from RGA, and posted to 14 Balloon Coy. Logical for an Artillery Officer
The Balloon Companies operated close to the front line, as their job was to observe Allied and enemy gunfire and positions. They moved regularly as the line moved and their positions were identified usually by map pinpoint reference. They were linked by telephone to the various batteries in their area as well as the Company and Wing HQ
