1916 Apr 15 MC Gazetted. Second Lieutenant Walter Charles Cook, The East Surrey Regiment, attached 7th Battalion. For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty when holding a crater with his platoon. He controlled his men skillfully, showed great disregard of danger, and for 48 hours held his position with coolness and resource, repelling in all three hostile attacks. Subsequently he made gallant attempts to erect wire under very heavy fire.
