John Grimshaw, Canadians


1885 Nov 9 Born Bolton Lancs on Canadian enlistment (the only man born in Bolton around them as "John Grimshaw" was in Jan/Mar 1886 not 1888, and this appears to be our man. If so I assume he was born in 9 Nov 1885 and registered in the next quarter

1891 Census at 33, Bridge Street, Great Lever, Darcy Lever

1901 census at 41, South Street, Bolton

1907 Jul/Sep Married in Bolton to Lilly Pearson

1908 circa. Left for Canada alone, his wife and child followed.

1911 Jun 12. Lily Grimshaw and child Bertha arrive in Canada to join Husband, a clerk, in Lethbridge, Alberta. Shipping records show she left Canada in 1916.

1914 Nov 9. Enlisted in Canadian Exp Force. He was a grocer. His next of kin was Mrs L Grimshaw. Note her address "Longfellow Drive, Bolton"

1919 Jan 30. Manitoba Regt. Temp. Lt. J. Grimshaw ceases to be seed. for duty with the R.A.F.

1918 Sep 30 Arrives in Canada from UK. It indicates he was a soldier who had left Canada in 1914 after 6 years living in Canada

1919 Apr 20 Lily and Bertha arrive in Canada to go to Vancouver

1920 Aug 1. Arrives in UK from Canada with wife Lily and child Bertha (aged 11)

1921 Mar 14. Joined ADRIC with service no 1840. Posted to P Coy

Fined by Coy Commander sums of £3, £2, £1, 15/- and 15/-

1922 Jan 24. Discharged on demobilisation of ADRIC

1923 Sep Died in an air crash. This is him. In the full trial reports, he is referred to as a Canadian, who had returned to UK in1920. And his age is correct. He is quoted in the evidence as living at Longfellow Drive - see RAF details above as well.
