An extraordinary career. The Royal Naval Museum purchased his medals in 2010 . A group of medals reflecting the extraordinary career of Captain James Frederick Maynard who served in the Royal Marines from 1894 to 1945. His medal group comprises: the Queen’s Sudan Medal; 1914 Star; British War Medal; Victory Medal; Defence Medal; War Medal; Royal Naval Long Service and Good Conduct Medal; Khedive’s Sudan Medal with three clasps and the Royal Humane Society Medal.. Sold for £6200.

1894 Mar 28 Enrolled in Royal Marines

1898 Assigned to HMS Colossus he was promoted to Bombardier, returning to shore establishment and now with the rank of Corporal he was attached to the Egyptian Army embarking April 1898. He would remain on attachment until April 1903 serving on the Nile with the Gunboat Flotilla. He  won the Queen's Sudan medal - and was also awarded the Khedive medal from Sudan with three clasps representing three battles

1900 Dec 13. He saved the life of a native who had fell into a crocodile infested lagoon on the White Nile and was awarded Royal Humane Society medal

1902 Aug 3. Married in London

1909 he was awarded the Long Service & Good Conduct Medal

1911 census at Royal Marine Artillery Barracks, Portsmouth

1914 Aug. at the outbreak of the Great War he embarked to Ostend with the Royal Marine Brigade and then served at Dunkirk and on the Western Front throughout the war receiving a commission in 1916

During the inter-war years he was appointed skipper of a private ocean-going yacht and in 1929 undertook and led a big game hunting party in central Africa.

At 63, he got involved in the Spanish Civil War, joining the Spanish non-intervention Organisation as a sea observation officer and helped escort ships into Spanish ports.

1939 Register Living at Hill House Cockshott Hill , Reigate M.B., Surrey,. He is a Retired Marine Officer. His wife Harriett is with him.

WW2 he volunteered again and was put in charge of security at the Admiralty

1968 Jul/Sep Died Ealing London aged 92
