Lt Douglas Steele


He is not Douglas William John Steele in Southampton. Father's Name: Albert Lewis William Steele : Mother's Name: Emma Helina . Douglas William John Steele enlisted into Princess Victoria’s (Royal Irish Fusiliers) as a regular soldier on 30 April 1903. He served in France with the 1st Battalion from 22 August 1914 and was evacuated to hospital in England on 20 July 1915. Having been transferred to The Royal Irish Regiment (renumbered 601), he was transferred back to Princess Victoria’s (Royal Irish Fusiliers) and sent to France on 23 May 1917. He joined the 9th (Service) Battalion as a Company Quartermaster Sergeant, in which capacity he served for the remainder of the war. He continued to serve as a regular soldier after the war (re-numbered 7040804) with the 1st Battalion in Persia and Mesopotamia in 1919/20. He was discharged on 30 June 1921 and died at Marlow, Buckinghamshire in 1975, aged 87.
