Raid on Mrs Ceannt's House on 16 Dec 1920

1920 Dec 16 A raid on Mrs Eamonn Ceannt's house was carried out by no3 platoon of I Coy under DI3 Vickers, and included 2 Secret Service officers. Mrs Ceannt was the widow of Eamonn Ceannt who was executed by the British following the Easter Rising in 1916 - it is impossib;le to say what bearing this had on the case.

Apart from the stuff that they were entitled to take away, the platoon removed a "set of Irish pipes" which they had to hand back

1921 Jan 4. Mrs Ceannt write to Dublin District to complain that a leather case, cigars and pipes were missing

1921 Jan 11. The letter gets to ADRIC

1921 Jan 12. Vicars reverts to T/Cadet

1921 Feb 23. Gill WP Commanding I Coy, sends a memo to Adjutant ADRIC outlining what happened during the raid. (see Dec 16 raid above).

According to letter above from WP Gill, No 3 Platoon is broken up and all the Cadets sent to other Companies. Only T/C G O'Shea remains in I Coy and he was in fact promoted to S/L on 1921 Mar 20. WP Gill says among other things that Vicars Platoon was broken up and all the men except for one (T/C G O'Shea) moved to other companies. This is not true, only 6 Cadets left I Coy between 12 Jan 1921 (Vicars reverts to T/C) and Feb 23 when Gill writes this letter. (They are 13 Jan 1921 Shiel RF Posted to P Coy, 16 Jan 1921 David FHS Posted to Depot, 21 Jan 1921 Boss PAA Permitted to resign, 24 Jan 1921 Blair FML Permitted to resign, 26 Jan 1921 Newton JF Deserted , 10 Feb 1921 Boyse A Permitted to resign on medical grounds, 14 Feb 1921 Browning RJ Posted to O Coy as IO and DI3.

1921 Feb 28 WP Gill moves to J Coy as Coy Commander to replace Seafield Grant who had been killed in an ambush on 25 Feb. Gill was obviously not aware of his move to J Coy when he wrote this letter on

1921 Apr 2. Dist-Inspector,Charles Vickers, courtmartialed for " Larceny and Receiving" Found Not Guilty. The Court Martial says that a music case was found in Vicars' lodgings. Mrs Ceannt does not appear to have included it on the list of missing items, but did identify it as hers when she was shown it. You can argue that she would identify it as hers wouldn't she, or equally well that she could not be aware of all the small things that might have been stolen on a raid. What one can say is that the ADRIC
