Then it turns out that it was not him. The local paper reported 13 months later
Body Found. —The body of a man was found Friday by William Soutar, labourer, Blackhills, lying at high water inwater in Strathlethen Bay. about half a mile south of Stonehaven. It was minus the head and arms, and in an advanced state decomposition. There were boots, socks, and trousers the body, which has not yet been identified. The trousers had rule pocket, and were mended with corduroy. The body was afterwards identified as that of William Donald, blacksmith, Stonehaven, who went missing on 18th January 1899, exactly 13 months ago."
