The local paper reported Three adults and a seven-month old baby were killed when a high explosive bomb demolished a house and razed another almost to the ground in a town in South-England. Two children were injured and a number of residents in the neighbourhood had remarkable escapes. In the house which was demolished Mr and Mrs R V Gordon were sleeping in a bedroom upstairs. Both were killed. Their daughter, Diana, and an evacuee, Patricia Ferris, who were sleeping in a front bedroom are believed to have been blown out of the house into the road. Both were injured and taken to hospital.
And a local resident said " I understand there were three bombs. One fell on Mandeville Rise, another on a house in Handside Lane, not far from the junction with Russellcroft Road, and the third at Stanborough, near Lemsford Lane. I don’t know about casualties. The three are in a line so possibly it was part of an attack on Hatfield aerodrome or maybe they were jettisoned. The house in Handside lane can be identified by being different from adjacent others.
