He would of had a Pension Certificate ( PC ). Cutting the corner off was probably their way of saying your not getting a pension

1899 Nov 28 Sentenced to 5 years gaol for wounding, In Winchester Gaol
1904 Nov 26 Liberated at end of his sentence
