1940 Sep 27 Died. Between 00.50 and 00.52 hours attacked and Sunk by U-137. . Manchester Brigade, having survived the first World War, was sunk on 26 September 1940 after being torpedoed by U-137 when bound for Montreal in convoy off Malin Head, to the north of Ireland; 58 crew were lost. The Manchester Brigade (Master Frederick L. Clough) was the ship of convoy commodore Vice-Admiral Humphrey Hugh Smith, DSO, RNR. The master, the commodore, five naval staff members, 50 crew members and one gunner were lost. Four crew members were picked up by the French hospital ship Canada and landed at Gibraltar.
